A two-stage honing of the blade makes the transition from a sharpening stone of regular grit (800 – 1200) to the finest edge easier.

Since Japanese water stones have a very loose grain bond, it is only logical that the bonding of the two stone halves cannot be extremely strong. It may happen that the two halves come apart. This is not a reason for complaint! Use a regular waterproof household adhesive to reattach the two parts, or simply continue using the two halves separately. The adhesive seam of combination stones does not always meet all aesthetic standards. However, we assume you intend to use it for sharpening, not for display in a showcase.
