Insert trimming cutters are an excellent choice when precise repeatability is required. This cannot be obtained in normal router bits, because during every sharpening a little material is removed and the cutter becomes smaller. But when an insert in one of these bits becomes dull, you can simply replace it with a new one. The indexable insert bits are especially rewarding if the bit is used frequently, as you save on downtime, sharpening and transport costs. Especially when using bits with a ring bearing, flush cutters for example, it is important that the blades are always in alignment with the bearing ring. This is guaranteed only with the insert bits, as with normal flush cutter bits, even after just the first sharpening, there is an offset, however slight. Another advantage for insert bits is that hitting metal imbedded in the wood can ruin a very expensive regular bit, but with these bits you can simply change the insert.

The inserts have two cutting edges, so that they need only be rotated when one edge becomes dull. Only when all the edges become dull must the insert be changed.

Advice: the insert cutters can be sharpened on a diamond stone, but then obviously one of the big advantages of these bits is lost: the exact dimensions of the edges and so the long-term repeatability of the cut.

Another hint: the construction of these bits makes them slightly less balanced than standard router bits. All quality manufacturers of these bits, including Sistemi Klein, strive to minimize this, so that in practical, everyday use, you will normally not notice. But it is, even so, a good idea to use only relatively powerful, high quality, routers from reputable manufacturers when working with these bits, and to make sure the motor is powerful enough to do the job.

**DLC-coated insert knife (2 required for each milling cutter!)**

The DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating is an extremely hard glide coating with a low coefficient of friction. The coating is just 1 µm thick and is applied using a low-temperature process that preserves the properties of the indexable insert cutter. According to the manufacturer this increases the service life up to eight-fold.
