Woodworking vices without speed clamping

For years we’ve been selling quality woodworking vices with speed clamping made by York in the Czech Republic. We’ve now decided to offer woodworking vices, without the speed-clamping feature, from the same manufacturer. What at first sight looks like sacrificing comfort for the sake of a lower price may show some interesting benefits in specific cases. We heard from one customer, whose workflow involved repeatedly clamping and releasing similarly sized workpieces, that the speed-clamping mechanism did not allow the vice to be opened just a fraction. Instead the speed-clamping mechanism had to be activated and the clamping faces pulled fully apart each time. This ultimately didn’t save any time when clamping similarly sized workpieces. Of course, there’s no real substitute for vices with a speed-clamping mechanism if you frequently clamp workpieces that differ greatly in size.

Another benefit of a woodworking vice without speed clamping is its simpler mechanical design. With steady use over many years, a speed-clamping mechanism will show signs of wear and tear and will need replacing. Although it won’t cost the earth, not having a speed-clamping mechanism saves you this expense.

These woodworking vices represent a genuine and inexpensive alternative to a fully equipped workbench. They can be used as front or tail vices. A woodworking vice can be mounted practically anywhere. All you need is a solid worktop on a solid base.

Woodworking vice type 52 – without speed clamping

It’s hard to imagine modern workshops today without heavy woodworking vices. In many cases they have replaced traditional workbenches. The main advantage is their great flexibility: you simply mount the vice where you happen to need it on your worktop – on a workbench the position of your vice is usually fixed.

Moreover, the moving vice jaw is provided with a retractable bench hook that lets you clamp workpieces along the face of your worktop. We recommend the round bench dogs from Veritas to implement this clamping option. Simply drill a few holes in your worktop to get started.
