Shirai-Sangyo White Paper Steel Saws

The saw manufacturer Shirai in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, Japan makes very high-quality saws in a type of "White-Paper Steel." This type of steel is often used for making the cutting edges of high-end laminated chisels and knives, but is not so often used to make saws. For these saws Shirai uses "Shirogami Nigo" a "White-Paper Steel," which has been modified for sawmakers and has a high carbon content.

The company Shirai-Sangyo is a living part of the tradition of saw manufacturers in the city of Sanjo, where the first sawsmith set up shop in 1673. The firm was founded in 1924 and remains today a traditional family-run operation. It is a pleasure to us to be able to offer here a few of these beautiful Ryoba and Dozuki saws. The steel of the blade is about 58 HRC. These are not saws well suited to beginners: they more for woodworkers with experience in these types of saws who are looking to upgrade their stock of tools.

Kerf of small Shirai Dozuki: 0.3 mm.

The kerf of the small Shirai Dozuki from the BANPO-ITSUNIKISU Series is 0.3 mm. The edge of the board in the photo was cut with this Dozuki saw. It is difficult to see the saw marks in the raw end of this test board.

Shirai-Sangyo Dozuki Saw with White Paper Steel Blade

Shirai-Sangyo Dozuki Saw with White Paper Steel Blade
Premium-Series BANPO-ITSUNIKISU
The back of this Dozuki is lightly bowed in order to follow the natural motion of hand sawing. This saw will produce an extremely fine cut: this is in part because the set on the teeth has been reduced to the minimum. The aggressively sharpened teeth make the saw very fast - it cuts like a hot knife in butter. Every blade is hand dressed after the smithing process for optimal straightness and precision. You can see the traces of this process as light hammer marks on the surface of the blade. Be careful: this saw will forgive no mistakes and is not for beginners. A jerky stroke can easily break a tooth. Workpieces must be clamped in place before sawing. Because the saw cuts so easily, it is tempting to just hold a piece of wood with one’s left hand instead of putting it in a vice. This is often the moment when the saw jams in the cut and the blade breaks. This Dozuki comes in two blade lengths, 225 mm and 250 mm.

Shirai-Sangyo Ryoba Saw with White Paper Steel Blade

Shirai-Sangyo Ryoba Saw with White Paper Steel Blade
Premium-Series BANPO-ITSUNIKISU
This saw has two cutting edges, one for crosscuts and one for ripcuts, and cuts unbelievably quickly and cleanly. This Ryoba, like the Dozuki above, features an aggressive sharpening geometry and you barely need any pressure on the saw to get the job done. Every blade is hand dressed after smithing for optimal straightness and precision. You can see the traces of this process on the blade as small dings from the hammer. The saw blade is thinner in the middle than at the cutting edges, so as to reduce friction and binding in the cut. This feature is only found in the highest-quality Ryoba blades. Although this saw is more robust than the Dozuki above, it is even less suited to beginners because there is no reinforcement from the back, as on the Dozuki. This saw is available in several sizes. The model with a blade length of 315 mm is the biggest Ryoba that we offer.
