Aluminium oxide finishing film

Aluminium oxide finishing film

These self-adhesive finishing films consist of a tough 125 µm (⅛ mm) thick polyester film with a uniform, waterproof aluminium oxide coating. The bond is flexible but retains grit on the surface well. This Alox finishing film is ideal for grinding hand tools and metal parts up to a hardness of 60 HRC. The sheets can be easily cut with scissors and affixed to any suitable flat surface, eg, plexiglass sheets, glass panes, stones or wood.

Besides tools, many materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, and wood can be effectively ground with these films. Use the films with oil or water, or dry. We recommend wet applications for a longer film life and a smoother finish.

These finishing films were originally developed for industrial applications which necessitated a uniform grit size and a uniform coating within narrow tolerances, such as exactly repeatable grinding and sharpening processes. In other skilled trades this film is used for dressing plane soles, sharpening tools, etc.

What is the difference between Alox finishing film and Alox lapping film?

In Alox finishing film the grit is spread on the bonding agent and then electrostatically righted so that the sharp points of the grit show through the surface. This results in a more aggressive abrasive.

In Alox lapping film the grit is embedded in the bonding agent resulting in a distinctly less aggressive action. This material is therefore suited for polishing.

Grit recommendations:

  • For sharpening hand tools, start with a grit size of 20 or 15 µm. Steel will be efficiently removed without creating any scratches too deep for subsequent treatment. Unlike with water stones, a few extra finishing steps with decreasing grit size are recommended for optimal results. A grit size of 9 µm constitutes a good intermediate step and prepares the metal surface for the use of the film with grit size of 3 µm. Perfectionists can go one better by using a film with a grit size of 1 µm to achieve a truly shiny metal surface.
  • To dress a plane sole, begin with a 100 µm film. This film is quite rough, but metal removal is very effective. To remove the grooves left by the 100 µm film, use a film with a grit size of 40 µm. Finishing with 20 µm film will result in an even smoother surface.
