Aluminium Oxide Finishing Film

Aluminium Oxide Finishing Film

These self-adhesive finishing films consist of a tough 125 micron thick (1/8 mm) polyester film with a uniform and waterproof aluminum oxide coating. The grain bond is flexible but retains grit on the surface well. This alox finishing film is ideal for grinding of hand tools and metal parts up to a hardness of 60 HRC. The sheets can be easily cut with scissors and adhered to any suitable flat surface such as plexiglass sheets, glass panes, stone, wood, etc.

Besides tool use, many materials such as metals, plastics, rubber and wood can be effectively ground with this film. Use is possible with oil, water, or dry. We recommend wet applications for a longer life and smoother surfaces.

Originally, these finishing films were developed for industrial applications in which uniform grain size and uniform coating within narrow tolerances were necessary, for example for when grinding and sharpening in industrial production must be exactly repeatable. In other skilled trades this film is used for dressing plane soles, sharpening tools, etc.

What is the difference between Alox Finishing Film and Alox Lapping Film?

In the case of Alox Finishing Film the grit is spread on the bonding agent and then electrostatically righted so that the sharp points of the grit show through the surface. This results in a more aggressive abrasive.

In the case of Alox Lapping Film the grit is contained in the bonding agent and the abrasive action is distinctly less aggressive. This abrasive material is therefore suited for polishing.

Grain recommendations:

  • For the sharpening of hand tools, you should start with a grain size of 20µ or 15µ. Steel is quite neatly removed without scratches that are too big for subsequent treatment. Though, unlike water stones, a few extra finishing steps with decreasing grain size should is recommended for optimal results. Grain size 9µ provides a good intermediate step and prepares the metal surface for use of the film with grain size 3µ. Perfectionists can then achieve a shiny metal surface with the film having a grain size of 1µ.
  • To dress a plane sole, one begins with a 100µ film. This film is quite rough, but the metal removal is so very effective. To smooth out the grooves caused by using the 100µ film, use a film with a grain size of 40µ. However, finishing with 20µ film will result in an even nicer surface.
