There are times when we all wish that we could finish a project with one grade of sandpaper, avoid the often tedious job of selecting the proper grit, and not have to keep a supply of different grits on hand. Unfortunately this is not the case, because different projects require different characteristics in the abrasive materials needed to finish them. Now, however, almost all work requiring hand sanding can be now be accomplished with the three varieties of sandpapers that we offer. We stock "MATADOR" and "ERSTA" brand papers, made in Germany, and well-known for their high quality.
"MATADOR" brand paper is waterproof, fully synthetic resin-bonded to flexible paper, densely coated with silicon carbide, and can be used wet or dry. When used wet, it is suitable for lacquered surfaces, as well as metal and wood. It is available in grit sizes up to 5000. It can be used dry, but will load up more quickly than papers designed specifically for dry use because of its high-density abrasive coating. "MATADOR" sandpaper can also be used with oil, at least short-term. If you frequently use oil when sanding, we recommend Micro-mesh!
"ERSTA" produces the ideal sandpaper for wood. "ERSTA" papers can also be used on lacquered surfaces and synthetics. Because the paper is not as densely coated as waterproof papers, it is does not load up as quickly. The abrasive used is aluminum oxide, which is not as hard as silicon carbide, and not quite as sharp. This is desirable particularly with soft materials such as wood, because it is not as likely to gouge. The abrasives in "ERSTA SUPER CUT" papers are fully synthetic resin-bonded and should not be confused with cheap flint papers or partially resin-bonded papers - even with those from the same manufacturer. Latex added to its backing makes "ERSTA SUPER CUT" paper flexible. The abrasive surface contains dust-repelling additives, giving it a considerably longer life than comparable papers.
Our metal-sanding papers are also produced by "ERSTA". These are highly flexible carborundum-coated, cotton-backed papers, fully synthetic resin-bonded, suitable for most metals and various materials, including wood. They are particularly well-suited for exacting work. To be used dry. Turners prefer these papers for lathe work because of their excellent flexibility.

Micro-mesh cushioned abrasives are constructed with a thin layer of soft resilient material between the cloth back and the abrasive crystals. This provides the unique "cushioned" action for the abrasives. This unique design allows the abrasive crystals to recede into the resilient layer and float to an even cutting plane. This eliminates deep random scratches and results in uniform scratch patterns and significantly longer product life than conventional abrasives. In dry applications, it outlasts conventional abrasives 5 - 7 times, when used wet, the life advantages increase 7 - 15 times that of conventional abrasives.
Micro-mesh can be used with most standard cutting oils, honing oils or coolants, either water or oil based. Micro-mesh can not be used with solvents like acetone or certain chlorinated solvents. Micro-Mesh can be used by hand. Use light pressure only, high pressure will not increase speed of your work.
Micro-mesh is not an aggressive stock remover. Common sandpaper is required for the removal of deep scratches before using Micro-mesh. Micro-mesh grit 1500 is similar to FEPA P800 or ANSI 400. The 12000 will leave a scratch pattern that cannot be detected by the human eye. See grit conversion chart.
Micro-mesh can be used for plastic, wood, many metals, finishes. Micro-mesh is used in many fields: furniture restoration, archeology, wood finishes, lense repair, acrylic repair, boats, watch glasses, wooden instruments, hand tool repair.
Delivery: We get Micromesh in rolls 152 mm (6 in.) wide and cut them into stripes of 100 mm (= 10 cm = 1 dm). If you need more than 100 mm of one grit size and you want it in one piece instead of different sheets, please let us know this when ordering. We then cut the length you wish individually for you.

This sanding system consists of plastic handles in several different shapes, that cut with replaceable abrasive metal plates. These sharpening files are extremely comfortable and handy to use. The sanding surface of the metal plates has a long service life, and cut very well over that life. The Japanese manufacturer rates the grain size at between 280 - 400, medium, under the Japanese standard. This corresponds to about 240 under the European standards. But because the tool is a metal plate and not sandpaper, the number is only an approximation to give an idea what one can expect.
These sanding files are very versatile in application. They are suitable, for example, for smoothing plastics, and are also very good for finishing wood surfaces. The round forms are particularly suitable for finishing grooves and contours by in wood and plastic.
