Precise, reliable measuring instruments are indispensable when a high degree of accuracy is required. Because of the major changes in the measuring tool industry, selection is no longer a simple task. Manufacture of measuring instruments has shifted over the last few years from the areas where they were historically produced, i.e., Western Europe, the U.S., and Japan, to China. Much lower Chinese wages have greatly reduced production costs, and an overwhelming number of measuring instruments produced world-wide are made in China. However, the lack the experience of over a hundred years of manufacturing measuring tools gathered in Europe, Japan and the U.S., becomes apparent in the questionable quality of the product.
The large difference in prices, not completely explained by the lower wages alone, are as a rule an indication of manufacturing origins. We are therefore forced to rely on manufacturers’ assertion as to the source of production, but still regularly test deliveries for compliance with stated specifications.

The edge is slightly rounded off, to help keep it from getting damaged, and to prevent it from cutting or marring the surface one wants to check.
