Missarkastones, Diamond Stones, Whetstones for Scythes, Belgian Breccias and more

|
It can be hard to find a good sharpening stone for modern stainless steels, which are so difficult to sharpen that even a Japanese waterstone will sometimes gunge up and cease to work. We had exactly that difficulty. However, we came upon the MISSARKA artificial stone. It is an artificial stone and an artificial name - concocted from Mississippi and Arkansas, the sources of the renowned natural stones which bear their names. The artificial product well deserves the combined title.
The natural stones are almost beaten by the whetting power of the MISSARKA. At the same time, the fineness of the razor edge produced is also better than that achieved with other artificial stones of similar grain size. The materials of which the stone is made, white and pink electro-corundum, have been sintered. In the process the sharp points of the corundum are rounded, so that the density of the stone increases and with it the keenness of the razor edge produced. The electro-corundum is pressed into blocks by means of a special technique that involves no bonding material. The latter is better avoided for fine hones because it causes gunging up when alloy steels are being sharpened.
The coarse side of the combination stone shown below is made of silicon carbide which does have bonding material included. The bond is not a problem for coarse-grained stones.
Kevin Wilkins, knife maker, recommend this stone for knife steels such as D2 oder ATS-34. It is also excellent for putting an edge on TWO CHERRIES chisels. The stone can be used with either water or oil. If you decide on the latter, check the bottom of this page for details of the whetstone oil made by TWO CHERRIES. Note: if you once start using oil on the stone, you cannot go back to water.
The Belgian Breccia, a natural stone for honing, you find here and the Diamond sharpening stones here.
Waterstones do wear concave with use and require periodic re-flattening. Our flattening stones will do this job. A flat stone is indispensable for effective sharpening, especially with flat blades like chisels and plane irons.

Left side of blade is treated with this rust erazer.
|
Rust Erazer
This rust erazer is made of grinding compounds mainly containing silicon carbide bound with stretchable plastic. They are abrasive cleaners, applicable to range of materials, such as steel, plastic, wood and leather. This includes rusty knives and the scales on measurement tools, which will become perfectly clear to read again. The advantage of binding the abrasive in soft elastic material is the way it hugs the material being worked. Use the product dry, wet or with oil - depending on the material in hand - work out your own solution by trial and error!
Size 65 x 40 x 9 mm (2-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/8 in.), made in Japan.
We recommend to take both as scratches from the medium erazer can be removed by the fine.

Diamond sharpening stones
Diamond sharpening stones are a genuine alternative to wet grinding machinery or conventional sharpening stones. Conventional sharpening stones become concave with use, but the diamond surface stays flat. The mirror side of a plane blade cannot be trimmed on a mechanical grindstone, but this can be easily done on the diamond stone. Working with a honing guide and coarser stones (grain size 180) the abrasion of steel is rapid. Smoothing away notches is thus no longer a problem. For honing, however, I tend to prefer waterstones, as diamond stones are not available in very fine grain size.
Diamond sharpening stones must never be used dry. Their grinding surface will be far from happy if this happens, and the blade will be no sharper. Wet the grinding surface with water first, every time! Use firm but not excessive pressure when working with diamond sharpening stones. Avoid very heavy pressure at the edges of the stones; this may abrade the diamond coating.
