The Kataba is a single sided saw without back. The blade of the Kataba saw is thicker (mostly 0.5 mm) than the blade of a Dozuki saw (mostly 0.3 mm). The thicker blade does not need a rigid back and therefore this saw can be used for deep and long cuts. This saw we recommend as general purpose saw because it makes clean and fast cuts and is inexpensive. Kataba saws are available with crosscut and ripcut teeth. If you do both crosscutting and ripping, and only want to own one saw, we recommend the fine teeth ripcut saw. Click on the images for a magnified view!
Juuma saws offer good quality and a good price. They are made in Japan. The teeth are laser-hardened, and are designed for wood and the various wood-based products. The blade on these saws is easy to take off, and so the saw can be easily tucked away in a tool box and is an indispensable companion in the workshop or a job site. The blades are interchangeable.
A great saw for a very good price for all kinds of fine rip sawing such as dovetails and tenons. Not exactly as fine as a ripcut dozuki, but the depth of cut is not limited. The ideal saw in connection with the VERITAS dovetail guide. The blade fits other JUUMA Katabas as well as the Kataba saw made by Bakuma and many other Kataba saws with the same blade length.
This Kataba is good for nearly all types of ripcut, specially for those who do not like to make ripcuts with the Ryoba saws, which has teeth on both sides of the blade. The blade fits other JUUMA Katabas as well as the Kataba saw made by Bakuma and many other Kataba saws with the same blade length. A coarse ripcut saw allows fast cutting!
Despite cutting on the pull stroke, like other Japanese saws, this saw features a "pistol" grip angled to 90° which makes it perhaps more comfortable for those used to Western-style saws. While Japanese saws are usually wider at the tip with the blades angling back toward the grip, this saw features a constant 63 mm wide blade and so feels closer to the Western saws in use. The constant blade width also makes the saw ideal for use in this saw guide for miter and cross cuts from the same manufacturer. Together they make the perfect pair for exact cuts. The teeth are specially hardened for a long useful blade life, and at the end of it, blade changes are simple and quick. The teeth are cut and set for diagonal and cross cuts. The saw will rip reasonably well, but in this use it is far slower than a saw designed for rip cutting. Manufactured in Japan by Z-Saw using the most modern technologies for hand saws.
A very fine cut in a folding saw! This is a very nicely made, compact, carpenter's and assembly saw. The ergonomically formed aluminum grip is covered in a soft insulating plastic for comfortable work, especially on cold job sites where frozen fingers can be a problem with metal tools. The blade locks in two positions, which can ease access to tight or awkward corners. See the small photo to the left! Another Advantage: The teeth are cut and set to a happy medium allowing cross, miter and rip cuts: that and the fact that it folds down into a compact little package with the blade shielded makes this a real space saver in any woodworker's travel kit. THE saw for the carpenter and for all woodwork that must be quick and clean. Designed for crosscut. With its usual well-tested quality, Silky has at last filled the niche for a folding Japanese kataba saw. Anyone who must take their tools on the road will treasure this saw. The blade is ground so that the blade becomes thinner toward the back. The saw is full-width only near the teeth. That way Silky can forgo setting the teeth without having the blade bind in the wood, which provides an unusually clean and precise cut. The teeth are impulse hardened and the blade is chrome finished. The handle is aluminium covered with rubber for a firm grip in all conditions.
Similar to the saw pictured above, but with finer teeth. This saw is made for fine joinery. The teeth are designed for crosscutting. With its usual, well-proven quality, Silky has at last filled the niche for a folding Japanese kataba saw. Anyone who has occasion to travel with their tools will treasure this saw. The tooth size of only a milimeter is, for a kataba in this size, unusually fine. The saw is ground so that the blade becomes thinner toward the back edge. The blade is full width only near the teeth. That way Silky can forgo setting the teeth without having the blade bind in the wood, while allowing an unusually clean and fine cut. The teeth are impulse hardened, and the blade has a hard chrome finish. The handle is made of aluminium covered with rubber for a firm grip in all conditions. More photos
