Honing Guides, Whetstone Holder, Silicon Carbide Powder

Honing Guides, Whetstone Holder, Bevel Gauge, Silicon Carbide Powder, Flattening Stone (Truing Stone)

A honing guide is really an essential for sharpening plane irons and chisels if the intention is to maintain or renew a clean, straight bevel. In fact, the aid is the only way for a beginner to manage this at all, and it is appreciated by the expert sharpener because it makes the job so much faster and easier.

Not all the aids are all things to all blades. Japanese and European tools, being differently designed, present different challenges to the honing guide. Always take care to fix the tool in the guide at as near to 90° as you can. This is especially important for planes with a narrow throat and no adjustment for the blade.

Veritas® Camber Roller Assembly for the Mk.II Honing Guide Veritas Camber Roller Assembly for the Mk.II Honing Guide
The Veritas Mk.II Honing Guide has been designed to produce accurate and repeatable square bevels on chisel and plane blades. However, when using smoothing planes on large, flat surfaces, it is desirable to hone a slight curve, or camber, into the edge of the blade. This allows the cut to taper out on each side, and avoids plane tracks in the surface.

Flattening Block for Sharpening Stones NANIWA Flattening Stone for Sharpening Stones
(Truing Stone)

These large flattening stones are ideal for flattening the surface of sharpening stones that have had a hollow or groove worn in them. A flat stone is vital for a good sharpening job. We offer these stones in three different grit sizes, allowing you to match the flattening stone to the sharpening stone in terms of speed in flattening and the smoothness of the finished surface. In principle one stone is all you really need, if you are prepared to put up with some disadvantages. A relatively coarse flattening stone works quickly, but leaves behind a rough surface on finer stones. This does not impair its function, but you usually end up grinding off more material than you need to. With a finer flattening stone, it takes more time, of course, but you end up with a smoother surface. More ...

Veritas Lapping Plate Veritas Lapping Plate
This lapping plate made of steel is made to flatten chisels, plane blades and the body of cast iron planes. This plate has grooves to take the slurry.

Not intended for heavy material removal, it is designed to condition or smooth previously ground surfaces and is used with light mineral or honing oil and silicon carbide powder (See below).

Important: This lapping plate should not be used
  • for flattening water stones, as the oil lubricant will ruin the water stone.
  • with water as a lubricant, as water will rust the lap.
  • for flattening oil stones, as any residual grit on the lap can be transferred to the stone, resulting in scratches during honing.
  • as a replacement for a honing stone, as the grooves are unsuitable for a honing guide and the blade bevel can be seriously damaged.
