Spokeshaves, Cabinet Scrapers, Beading Tool
Spokeshaves are versatile tools, often overlooked by woodworkers. They are indispensable when working curved surfaces, round or square stock, and are the chairmaker's most important tool. Even today, they are highly useful in building wooden boats. Bowmakers also value the spokeshave for its usefulness in the fine detail work necessary in shaping bows.
In planes, the optimum cutting angle is determined by the shape of the plane. In spokeshaves, because of their very short soles - 3/8 in. (10 mm) to 9/16 in. (15 mm) - the cutting angle depends on how the tool is held. To hold a spokeshave properly takes some practice, which may not be immediately apparent to the inexperienced user.
Adjusting the iron takes considerable care. Even on spokeshaves with a fine adjustment feature, setting the iron correctly is somewhat fussy. Because the irons of low-priced spokeshaves (Kunz, Stanley, Record, Anant) are not completely satisfactory, we recommend replacing them with spokeshave blades made by Ron Hock. These fit the Stanley, Record and Anant spokeshaves, as well as several of the models from Kunz. Hock irons for Stanley spokeshave No. 151 can be used for Kunz models 51A and 51AR, but their throats must be filed slightly wider and the threads for the adjustment screw must be exchanged with longer threads (metric!).

VERITAS Low Angle Spokeshave
The new VERITAS spokeshave has the same low cutting angle as spokeshaves of old (20° basic bevel with a 25° micro-bevel), but cutting depth adjustment has been simplified substantially. Instead of adjusting blade projection, the blade is fixed, forming the sole of the spokeshave. The toe piece is adjustable to control the depth of cut.

Small Pullshave
With this small pullshave (spoon plane) you can hollow many objects like chair seats and flat bowls.

Notice: as with all low priced concave and convex spokeshaves the radius of the blade does not match exactly the radius of the plane body. For the described purpose this pullshave works well and is a real bargain. For finer work we recommend to tune blade or body.

VERITAS Chair Devils
Chair devils are wonderful tools for final shaping and smoothing of round parts such as chair spindles and posts. The specially shaped scraper blade rounds the workpiece, removing any spokeshave marks.
Available in three sizes: the 1/2" (12.7 mm) diameter for spindles, the 7/8" (22.2 mm) diameter for rungs, and the 1-1/4" (31.8 mm) diameter for legs and posts, as well as canoe paddle shafts.
The machined steel bodies are fitted with bubinga handles shaped for comfort and control when either pulling or pushing. The machined toe and the two thumbscrews are solid brass. The high-carbon steel blades are 0.040" (1.0 mm) thick, hardened to Rc48-52, and come with a finely ground 45° cutting edge.
Full instructions included.
These tools are a joy to use and are an excellent companion for spokeshave use.

VERITAS Scraper Shave
The Veritas scraper shave is a versatile small scraper suitable for small-scale work, fine detailing, or any application where a normal scraping plane would be too large.
The design of the tool allows a controlled scraping action that effectively smoothes the workpiece. Can be used as a companion tool with the above chair devils for smoothing of non-round chair parts such as crest rails, arm bows and seat blank edges.
Similar in construction to the chair devils, it has a machined steel body, comfortable bubinga handles, and a solid brass machined toe and thumbscrews.
The high-carbon steel blade is 0.040" (1 mm) thick, 1-5/8" (41.2 mm) wide, and hardened to Rc48-52, with a 45° cutting edge that can be readily burnished to create a long-lasting hook.

VERITAS Chairmaker's Scraper
While this chairmaker's scraper was designed primarily for chairmakers' use, it can be used for any other scraping task in the shop. The appeal of this tool is that it can be used as is for scraping flat surfaces with the included straight blade. The blade is 1-21/32" (42 mm) wide
For scraping round pieces, additional blades are available: three concave shapes in 1/2", 7/8" and 1-1/4" diameters and one convex (1-1/2" radius). The straight blade could also be ground to a specific shape.
All blades are made from 0.060" (1.6 mm) thick high-carbon steel. The machined cast steel body is fitted with a large rear handle and a front knob of bubinga.

Special spokeshave for bowmaking
Hand-made spokeshave for making bows, arrows and knife handles
This spokeshave has been designed to work on knife handles and straighten and smooth the edges by taking away only thin shavings of wood - precise and clean also with heavily irregular course of the grain. Of course, the spokeshave can also be used for tillering wooden bows or tapering wooden arrows.
The blade of the spokeshave is positioned in an angle of approximately 90° to the workpiece. It is possible to take away really thin shavings because the cutting edge of the blade has a burr. This blade must be sharpened like a scraper. See instruction how to
sharpen a scraper and instruction
how to use this spokeshave.

Note: If you order a spare iron for these spoke shaves, the iron for the small Kunz pocket planes will be delivered. As supplied, these irons are too hard to be able to form a durable burr on the edge. Fixing the problem is easy however: put the iron in an oven for 25 minutes at 220°C. This will reduce the blade’s hardness enough to enable you to dress and burnish the edge to form a cutting burr.
