Dowel Maker and Dowel Sizing Plate

Dowel Cutter (Tapered Tenon Cutter) |
|
These cutters made by Veritas can be used two ways. Using them like a hand-held pencil sharpener, you can put accurate tenons on the tips of turnings or on rustic furniture components. The cutters can also be used with a power feed to make accurate dowelling.
Using a hand drill for power, you need only cut square stock slightly oversize (1/16 in. over is ample) and use a square socket to power the stock through the dowel cutter. The carbon-steel blade in the plated zinc-alloy body is adjustable.
Works equally well in soft, green or hard woods. The curved blade is relatively easy to sharpen when required. Available in three finish diameters only: 3/8 in. (9.5 mm), 7/16 in. (11.1 mm) and 1/2 in. (12.7 mm).

Taper Reamer |
|
Designed for use in a hand brace, this reamer offers excellent control and good cutting capability for general woodworking. It is particularly useful for tapering through holes where you want to be able to wedge tenons, such as in chair construction. This reamer has a cast steel alloy body, a separate spring-steel blade, and a pair of blade-adjusting set screws.
When reaming out an existing hole (7/16 in. to 1-3/16 in. in diameter) (11 mm to 30 mm), the depth can be adjusted for working soft or hard woods and the angle can be adjusted for tenon/socket fit. The body has an included angle of 12.8° to match the tenons from the Veritas Tapered Tenon Cutters when making chair-leg socket joints.
Comes with a tapered square shank for use in a two-jaw or four-jaw hand brace. Blade is easy to sharpen. Made by Veritas.
Min. width 7/16 in. (11 mm)
Max. width 1-3/16 in. (30 mm)

Dowel Sizing Plate |
|
With this dowel sizing plate you make your own correct sized dowels. Drive roughly sized stock through a hole of the hardened steel plate and on the other side appears the dowel with the desired diameter. The plate is hardened to 52 HRC. Quick and easy to use. We recommend to fix the plate on a piece of wood leaving enough space for the dowels to come through.
Size 130 x 38 x 6 mm
For dowels 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 und 16 mm

You can easily make dowels in your favorite wood! This professional-grade dowel cutter - "Made in Germany" - lets you easily turn square stock into handy dowels.
If you plan to buy the dowel maker, you'll need:
an electric drill and a fixture to hold it. You probably already have the drill; the fixture may be purchased at any woodworking dealer.
To make dowels, you'll need the basic tool ("Grundgerät"), one of the two drives ("Mitnehmer") we offer to produce the desired dowel size, and an adapter sleeve insert (Einsatzhülse) of the corresponding diameter. Enlargement Delivery time approx. 1 week!
Here's how to do it:
- Attach adapter to basic tool, adjust for fine cut.
- Have square stock about 1/16 in. larger than the desired dowel size handy.
- Mount horizontal fixture and drill (unplugged!) on a stable surface and attach drive.
- Plug in drill and set speed between 1000 and 2800 r.p.m., hold dowel cutter in right hand, and workpiece loosely in left hand. Insert right end of workpiece into the conical opening of the cutter, and feed into the drive, using short, sharp, straight motions.
- Don't be surprised when the workpiece begins to turn in your hand - this is normal. Release the workpiece quickly and press the dowel cutter gently and evenly toward the drill.
-
The finished dowel is easily released from the drive, without having to shut off the drill, once pressure on the cutter is eased.
