We have offered combination squares in the past, but due to their generally poor quality, we stopped stocking them, and have not carried them for quite a while.
Now we are happy to be able to offer the world’s best. It is made by STARRETT, in Athol, Massachusetts, USA. In the December, 2002 issue of Fine Woodworking, many combination squares were tested and reviewed. Of its type, the STARRETT was deemed to be "the best tool on the market", and the brand has long been thought to be the "gold standard" when it comes to squares and rules.
The hardened and tempered steel ruler is machine marked. The graduations are deeply etched and easy to read. On one side of the ruler, the graduations in 1 mm and 1/2 mm run from left to right, and on the other the same scale runs from right to left. It comes with regular finish.
STARRETT offers the square head and centred head made of cast iron or of forged and hardened steel. Our regular package features the quality option: forged and hardened steel, so you get the best available. The round protractor head is made of cast iron and is reversible.
Very useful accessories included in the package are the the hardened-steel scriber and the spirit levels included in the square and protractor heads.
We also offer an economy-grade combination square. This is a relatively inexpensive square, but one that you can trust, as with all other STARRETT tools. The blade is only 150 mm long, the fence is made of cast iron, and the scriber and spirit level are not included.
Take the time to also have a look at the STARRETT Double Squares and the STARRETT steel rules!
STARRETT quality has its price, however. If you find this price too far outside your budget for a combination square, then another possibility is this Taiwan-made combination square in aluminium. It is not near as accurate, well made, or stable as the STARRETT models, but it offers honest quality for the price.
