Every standard type of bit for wood or metal with a circular shank which is commercially available can be inserted into the wheelbraces, up to the size given in each case. These pin vises are useful for securely holding small stock, taps, drills, reamers, scribers, wire, small files, and other tools. The jaws on all are hardened and with a few turns of the binding nut, a firm grip may be obtained. Handles and binding nuts are nickel plated. A hole extends to the full length of the handles so that wires of any length can be held. Jaw Brace with plastic handles
This jaw brace has a four-jaw chuck, which means that the bit is clamped by a very reliable mechanism with four jaws. There is an integral ratchet to make drilling easier in confined spaces. Handles made of black plastic. An ideal brace for square-ended bits (as found on our spiral bit page), which are gripped immovably. Because the brace is designed to take bits with a square-ended shaft that fits into a square ( 8 x 8 mm) socket at the base of the chuck, bits with round shafts are held in place only by pressure from the four jaws in the chuck. Round bits will tend to slip when torque is applied using the brace, and so are not recommended. Made in Taiwan.

The wooden grips on this jaw brace add a bit of warmth and good looks to this quality tool. The wooden parts are not oiled or finished in any way. We, like many other woodworkers, think this is the best way to treat grips like this, as the wood is free to absorb sweat from one's hands, making the tool many times more comfortable to use. The size of the hole is designed to accept the most common sizes of square-ended bits. Tools with conical shaft for use with brace
The brace can be a very versatile tool, given a good choice of bits with square-ended shafts to fit it. Unfortunately the range of these tools currently available is much reduced and many useful bits are now difficult or almost impossible to find. Over the years though, we have made an effort to track down supplies of these kinds of tools, and on our website one can find a relatively wide variety of them, some of which are currently in production, and others that come on the market from time to time, from warehouse sales for instance. We are working to increase the range of these types of tools that we can offer, because we think hand braces are an enormously useful and versatile tool and one that is far too under-appreciated these days.
