How thick a branch will this pole pruner cut?

The relative hardness of the wood is the major controlling factor. With very soft woods, one can easily cut through big branches. But with harder woods, you should stop immediately if you think the pruner is not up to the job. If the cord breaks, you know you have asked the tool to do too much!

Knots

The branches in this photo are of hawthorn. The one on the left side is 15 mm thick. The pole shears will buzz through a hundred like it without any strain. The branch on the right is 22 mm thick. You can occasionally cut branches this thick, but that is about as big as you can go. You must pull very hard on the rope, and the telescopic pole will start to bend a bit.

If the cutter doesn’t spring back open during use, very often it has been gummed up with resin or sap from the trees. Oiling the blade occasionally during use is the best way to protect the blades from sap buildup and prevent this happening. If the shears end up really frozen, then a sap cleaner or solvent is recommended.
