Below: A look at the chisel's back. The hollow-ground back is easy to see.

Many ask what will happen if, during normal sharpening, one sharpens away the two or three millimetres of flat between the hollow's center and the edge? They wonder if the chisel will still be usable. The answer is that when one sharpens the bevel side, one must also dress the back of the chisel on a flat stone. And so as one takes off steel on the bevel, dressing the chisel's back maintains the flat cutting edge by progressively grinding away the hollow toward the rear and flattening out the leading edge. One must be careful not to grind too much on the back so that the hollow disappears completely. But this is easy to control when sharpening by hand on a good stone. Have a look at our directions for sharpening chisels.
