Gimlets with Eye - Detail

These Austrian-made traditional eye gimlets are designed to be used only by hand. They would long-ago have disappeared from the market if they were not better for some jobs than any other type of drill. The eye at the top is designed to take a dowel to turn the gimlet. (Not included!) Wind instrument makers treasure them because their design allows the point to naturally follow the pith down through the center of a round piece of wood. The gimlet's conical spiral follows gentle bends in the wood. Because of this, this tool is perfect for making flutes. For long wind instruments, like the fujara (Slovakian overtone flute) or the didgeridoo (traditional Australian Aboriginal wind instrument) the shaft can be sawn through and an extension welded in place to gain the necessary length. We cannot sell these tools in anything but the standard lengths, however. Only to be turned by hand!
