Tapered Snug-Plug Cutters

Tapered Snug-Plug Cutters

Tapered Snug-Plug Cutters

It is always difficult to fit plugs perfectly; any slight runout in your drill-press quill can make the holes oversize. Unfortunately, this runout will also make plugs undersize. The combination leads to ill-fitting plugs that are very noticeable in your finished work.

Snug-Plug cutters are designed to cut slightly tapered plugs; the first 3 mm of the plug is the stated size (6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm) and then flares out at a 3° included angle.

Unlike regular plug cutters, they also shave the plug sides as they cut, producing very smooth plugs. Put a bit of glue in the hole, just tap a plug into it until you meet resistance, then cut off the excess. You will then have a plug that fits perfectly, with a nearly invisible line between the plug and the workpiece.

These plug cutters are carefully reamed after hardening to ensure perfect concentricity. It is difficult to believe how nice a plugging job you can do until you actually use one. 9.5 mm shanks.

are the only ones that have a cylindrical portion for good penetration, then taper for a tight fit. If you cut plugs from scrap that matches your work, line up the grain, and trim carefully, the result will be nearly invisible.

Sharpening

Snug-Plug Cutters come ready for use but should be honed occasionally for optimum cutting. Using a thin flat file, a sharpening stone or 320x sandpaper glued to hardboard, hone the face of each tooth, maintaining the factory rake angle.

After prolonged use, if the tips dull, file the top bevel at the original angle. Keep the tooth height even.

Advantages

Advantages over cylindrical plugs.

They always fit snugly. Even if a hole is 0.4 mm oversize, a tapered plug will fit snugly. This ensures that you have no unsightly gaps in your finished work.

The first portion of the plug is cylindrical and has a rounded tip, ensuring easy entry and adequate penetration before the taper comes into play.

Tapered plugs have smooth, shaved sides, eliminating the torn fibers that usually result from using one, two or four-flute cylindrical cutters.
