Book: The Tub Boats of Sado Island by Douglas Brooks

The TARAIBUNE, or tub boat, is one of the most unusual inshore fishing craft to be found in Japan. This craft is closely related to the traditons of barrel and bucket making.

TARAIBUNE

Over the years the range of their use has slowly receded. On Sado's Ogi Peninsula, the taraibune remains a viable boat in the rich fishing grounds that exist close inshore.

This book wants to document as completely as possible the craft of building taraibune. Ideally, a competent woodworker will be able to read this book and successfully build a taraibune.

TARAIBUNE Side planks are waiting for final shape.
TARAIBUNE Patterns to aid in shaping the planking. One edge of the pattern was cut to the proper curve ot the inside face of the planking.
TARAIBUNE The opposite edge had the curve of the outside face ot the planking plus the bevel of the plank edge.
TARAIBUNE At this point the boat looks like a giant flower, with the bottom in the center and the planking laid out around it like petals.
TARAIBUNE Side assembly by inserting bamboo nails.
TARAIBUNE Putting the bottom into the side assembly is a task that will inevitably requree several attempts.
TARAIBUNE Bamboo hoops hold the taraibune together.
