This spokeshave has been designed to work on knife handles and straighten and smooth the edges by taking away only thin shavings of wood - precise and clean also with heavily irregular course of the grain. Of course, the spokeshave can also be used for tillering wooden bows or tapering wooden arrows.

The body of the spokeshave is made of precious wood. The surface is treated with a special mixture of carnauba and bees wax with orange oil. The knurled adjusting nuts, threads and sole are made of brass.

The blade of the spokeshave is positioned in an angle of approximately 90° to the workpiece. It is possible to take away really thin shavings because the cutting edge of the blade has a burr. This blade must be sharpened like a scraper.

See a short video how this spokeshave works (approx. 12 MB).

How to use this spokeshave

The sole is attached with knurled nuts to the body of the spokeshave. The adjusting plate is fixed by a combination of knurled nuts and springs.

When the knurled nuts of the adjusting plate are slightly loosened, a small gap between adjusting plate and mouth can be opened by pressing the knurled nuts.
The blade is inserted into this gap. After that it is not longer necessary to put pressure on the knurled nuts, but the blade can be easily pulled through the gap and be adjusted.
The blade should be adjusted in such a way that approximately 0.1 mm of the blade sticks out above the sole - the more you can see of the blade, the thicker the shavings will be !

After adjusting the blade in the desired way the knurled nuts are firmly tightened by hand.
You can use the spokeshave (with both hands or with one hand) on the pull stroke or on the push stroke. Please note that there should be an almost right angle between workpiece and spokeshave!
A honing guide is a helpful tool for sharpening the blade of the spokeshave. To raise a burr use a burnisher.
