Workbench built by Thomas B., Neu Boltersen, Germany |
This workbench has an inset breadboard end. |
Overall view
This workbench was built out of maple and American Cherry (black cherry). The frame received two coats and the top four coats of Kunos oil finish from Livos. Length x Width x Height: 1800 x 600 x 940 mm Weight about 130 kg Completion time: 93,5 hours |
Bench stop border and breadboard end were connected using a blind dovetail joint. |
A photo from the construction: The breadboard end, joined to the bench stop face strip with a blind dovetail, is a fiddly and difficult joint to make. But the bench top will be absolutely solid, natural expansion and contraction from humidity will not effect the piece. |
With the modern white glues available, the use of treenails in the frame joints could be considered overkill and is probably more for the "hand built" aesthetic than for function. But Thomas thinks, and we agree, that the pegged joints offer additional stability and security. |
The way the tail vice has been set into the bench end is interesting.
The inspiration for the bench came from the Shaker work benches, which are outlined in "The Workbench Book", that we sell. |
