The Veritas dovetail saw is an innovative blend of tradition and technology. It incorporates all of the critical characteristics of a classic fine joinery saw, yet is executed using modern production processes and state-of-the-art materials.
The 9-1/4 inch (230 mm) long, 0.020 inch (0.5 mm) thick high-carbon steel blade features 14 rip-cut teeth per inch, having 0.003 inch (0.07 mm) of set per side. Depth of cut is about 1-1/2 inch (37 mm).
What really stands out is the revolutionary spine; it is injection molded under high pressure using an advanced material, incorporating stainless-steel powder for weight, glass fiber for stiffness, and a polymer resin binder.
The saw has excellent balance, cuts easily and true, and has a comfortable pistol grip that makes the saw feel as if it’s an extension of your arm. Measures 14-1/4 inch (362 mm) long overall. Since the blade is high-carbon steel, the teeth can be resharpened when necessary. A light coating of oil or wax will prevent the blade from rusting.
The blade and stainless-steel handle-mounting bolt are completely over-molded, creating a solid one-piece blade/spine/mount assembly. A single brass fastener secures the bubinga handle.
The teeth on the dovetail saw are filed rip at 14 teeth per inch, with a 14° rake using the typical 60° included angle.
As supplied, the dovetail saw will have residual sharpening burrs on the teeth. While the burrs will disappear as the saw is "broken in", a light stoning before initial use will improve starting cuts. Place the blade on a flat surface, letting the spine overhang the edge. Lightly run a stone (max. 1200x) over each side of the blade, taking no more than two strokes per side.
Caution: Stoning will reduce the set in the teeth. Since there is very little set in the teeth, you want to be sure not to remove too much of it.
